Visiting researchers

Each year, the Centre for European Law (CDE) welcomes several visiting researchers for stays ranging from one to six months. Please note that we do not accept applications for visits shorter than one month or longer than six months, nor for visits during July and August, when there are no academic activities.

During the Research Stay

Visiting researchers are integrated into the CDE team and are encouraged to engage in the Centre’s academic activities. In particular, they are invited to present their research at one of the Centre’s internal seminars. They will have access to the Centre’s logistical support and benefit from free use of the University’s facilities.

Each visiting researcher will be assigned a mentor to discuss their research. While mentors are available for academic discussion, their existing commitments do not allow for regular guidance or ongoing thesis supervision during the visit. Prospective visiting researchers are invited to identify a potential mentor among the professors of the Centre and you can find their profiles and fields of interest on the page presenting the Centre’s team

Eligibility

The programme is open to:

  • PhD candidates enrolled at another university or research institute;
  • Post-doctoral researchers;
  • Scholars from other universities or research institutions.

Please note that Master students are not eligible to apply.

Application Deadlines and Selection Process

Applications are reviewed twice a year, based on the following deadlines:

  • 31st May: for visits starting in September of the same academic year. Decisions will be communicated by the end of June.
  • 30th September: for visits starting in January of the following calendar year. Decisions will be communicated by the end of October.

The selection process considers the applicant’s academic profile and the quality and relevance of their research project, which must align with the Centre’s focus on European Law and its main research areas.

How to Apply

Applications must include:

  • A cover letter;
  • A curriculum vitae, including a list of publications;
  • A research proposal (maximum 3 pages).

Please send your application by email to the Director of the Centre at the following address: chiara.armeni@ulb.be

Additional Information

The Centre cannot provide financial support or guarantee access to a dedicated workspace. Applicants are responsible for securing their own funding and social security coverage for the duration of their stay. Unfortunately, the Centre and the University cannot offer assistance or advice regarding funding opportunities.

Applicants who require a visa to enter Belgium may, upon acceptance, receive support from the University’s international office, which assists foreign students and researchers with visa applications.
