On 3 March was held the third “Apéro du droit européen” of the academic year entitled: ” Who is smuggler ? Rethinking the criminalization of migrant smuggling in light of the principle of European solidarity “.
The discussions focused on issues related to the widespread use of criminal prosecutions against NGOs and individuals who assist migrants for humanitarian purposes. Speakers have been Ms Francesca Cancellaro, who is a defense lawyer in several high-profile criminal proceedings against NGOs in Italy, and Dr Stefano Zirulia from the University of Milan, who recently co-edited a book on the subject. The debate has been moderated by Angelo Marletta, Postdoctoral Researcher (FNRS), Centre for European Law (ULB).
