Francqui Chair 2021

15 March 2021  à  16h 00 - 18h 00

During the second semester of this academic year, the Law Faculty of the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Centre of European Law will be pleased to welcome the Former Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union, Eleanor Sharpston, as the holder of the Francqui Chair 2021. In this framework, she will provide a set of lessons focusing on the protection of the rule of law in the EU. The inaugural lesson will be held on 1 March at 6 PM, online due to sanitary reasons. Registration is free but mandatory on the following link.

The chair will concern the protection of the rule of law in the EU. Why does it matter? What does it really mean? What are the sources of this principle? In order to answer these questions, Eleanor Sharpston will provide a set of lessons focusing on the protection of this fundamental value in different fields of EU law such as asylum law and external relations of the EU – and on questions linked to the right of access to a court and the independence of the judiciary. These issues are very topical, notably due to the current context of democratic backlash in several Member States of the EU.
