Evening Conference “What role for EU actors in the fight against international core crimes?” (ECLAN Summer School)
5 July 2023 à 17h 00 - 18h 30
Evening conference organised in the framework of the IEE – ECLAN Summer School on the EU Area of Criminal Justice
Presentation of the topic
International core crimes, namely war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and crime of aggression, count among the most severe violations of international law, and their investigation and prosecution has always been a concern for the international community, despite the challenges it presents.
The European Union has supported the development of international criminal justice through the establishment of specialized international jurisdictions, and the adoption and implementation of measures aimed at fighting the impunity of those who committed international core crimes, regardless of their rank and positions. This support found its first expressions in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when the EU supported the creation of two ad hoc international tribunals and participated to the establishment of the International Criminal Court. Its support remained constant, although less visible throughout the years.
The war in Ukraine has generated a new impetus in the EU’s actions to promote the investigation and prosecution of international core crimes, with the adoption of innovative solutions. EU actors, such as Eurojust – the EU Agency for Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters, or the Genocide Network, have been called upon to support the ongoing investigations and prosecutions, building upon the expertise and experience they have acquired in this field.
The conference, whose speakers will be shortly announced, will address this timely issue and offer the opportunity to discuss how the EU, and especially some of its agencies and networks, are mobilised to support the fight against international core crimes.
