Le 26 juin 2017, Dorothea Staes défendra publiquement sa thèse intitulée « When the European Court of Human Rights refers to External Instruments. Mapping and Justifications ».

Sa thèse est réalisée en co-tutelle entre l’Université Libre de Bruxelles et l’Université Saint-Louis, sous la direction d’Isabelle Rorive (ULB) et Sébastien Van Drooghenbroeck (FUSL).
