
Benedetta Arrighini

Benedetta Arrighini is an MSCA PhD student at ULB, FGV Direito Rio and LUISS University in Rome, as part of the GEM Diamond Programme (Horizon 2020).
She holds an LL.M. in Law from the College of Europe (Bruges) and a Master’s degree in Law from the University of Trento. She is a qualified lawyer in Italy.
The title of her doctoral research is ‘The rule of law and cooperation in criminal matters in the EU and Mercosur: from comparative regionalism to interregional relations’. The main idea is to use comparative regionalism and interregionalism to understand EU cooperation in criminal matters with third countries and how fundamental rights of suspects and accused are respected.
Her previous research has focused on European and international criminal law. For her LL.M. thesis, she examined the impact of the Foreign Terrorist Fighters’ Directive (2017/541) on the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence.
